Right, poured a dram and… wow, this is not an easy baby to get to know at first. Nose is straight-up grass juice and green pepper, with a whiff of sorrel and green pears hiding behind. Feels very grassy, almost like crushing wet leaves. First sip is a real jolt. Very tart lemonness hits hard, then a wave of grapefruit and tomato. There’s a low-wine vibe in there, almost sour like a sweet beer that’s turned. A bit of rhubarb peelings and artichoke, maybe even turnips? The hogshead had a lot of work to do, you can tell. A splash of water may help, actually. Tames the greenness a bit, brings out more of that grape skins and fig note. Still very Glen Spey, if you know what I mean. The finish is rather long, and the aftertaste is rather on vanilla, which is a nice, warm surprise after all that sharpness. Like switching from an IPA to a quiet ale. Still, gold colour aside, it’s a proper challenge to drink. Not one for a casual beer night, that’s for sure. 🤔
