Whiskyspace Notes 1512

Just had a dram of this ex-refill 1960s bottling and honestly, I'm still processing it. The nose hit me straight away — mangos, guavas, pears, bananas... almost like a tropical fruit salad someone left in the sun. But there's this freshness too, absolutely flabbergasting freshness for something this old. Went in a tad worrisome about overoak but not a iota of that here. Then the palate kicked in — totally entrancing fruitiness with nougat and what I can only describe as middle-eastern sour bread. Like proper old Gewurztraminer Vendanges Tardives vibes. Those amazing fruits just keep coming. Finish is medium, and yeah, the oak shows up eventually but more like a gentle guest than an unwanted intruder. The gold colour is beautiful. Not that many changes over time but what's there is utterly magnificent. This little Lowlander really surprised me. It's the last cask apparently and you can tell — feels like true history in a glass. A collectable whisky no doubt, though honestly I'd rather drink it than stare at it on a shelf 🥃 Only word of caution — once you've tasted this kind of thing, everything else feels a bit ordinary for a while. Growing fear my standards are now ruined 😅 Miracles do happen I suppose. The best thing I've had in ages.
