Had a wee dram of this one last night – very young malts, maybe four or five years, and it shows. First sniff was like sticking your nose into a glass of apple juice and plum eau-de-vie, but then it drifted more towards kirsch rather than plum. Poured a bit, let it sit. Not unpleasant at all, just… too young. Sweet and barleyish straight away, almost like cherries on porridge with a splash of cream, then that fine oily vanilla comes through – surprisingly quite long for the age. The wood is ‘heavy’ but not in a gnarly way, more like a Tennessee cask had a gentle word with it during a mild climate spell. Still, it’s hard to come up with ‘mature’ whisky here; you get less raw notes than expected, but there’s a definite white wine sharpness, like a special cut of very young spirit that someone decided to bottle early. Showing promise though. I’d probably keep this rather for mixing – a splash in a Highball or an old-school punch would be fairly better than sipping neat. Without peat, so it’s an easy-going sweet one. 🍏🍒
