Right, so… this one’s a funny one provided you like bitter drams. It’s dark gold, almost with a glint of gold flakes floating in it like Danziger Goldwasser, but don’t let that fool you. The nose is a right mix – whiffs of pencil shavings, straight almonds, and a blend of chocolate and kirsch that sits somewhere between a strong herbal liqueur and a walnut liqueur. There’s more herbal tones, definitely, and lapsang souchong smoke, though it’s less 'peat' and more tarry liquorice. On the palate the oak's been tamed just enough – big peppery oak gives way to sweet spiciness and bitter oranges, then bitter chocolate, overripe strawberries, and walnuts. It’s almondy, like cinnamon cake soaked in black tea, but the oak's growing bigger as it breathes, almost too extractive/oaky at points. Never any varnish, though, so that’s perfect. Honestly, it’s akin to a peater's who’s swapped the boggy smoke for heavy liquorice and stone fruits. Long finish, bitter, chocolatey… not hopeless at all, just for those of us who’d take this over those beautiful ones made from junk vodkas any day.
