Right, so I cracked this one open and was immediately thrown by the label – almost a pre-animal sort of vibe, proper old-school. First sniff, and I’m not even thinking whisky, I’m thinking tequila, weirdly. There’s this roasted malt backbone, but then it shifts to a black earth thing, like damp soil in Catalonia. It’s gone quite tertiary already. Freshly ground pepper prickles, and there’s a touch of yeast, bready, a bit like a French farmhouse loaf. With a drop of water it gets even stranger, in a lovely way. Sip brings that Nescafé bitterness, but then it morphs into old Banyuls, that rancio-style wine. Velvety, subtle notes of leather. It’s excellent, honestly. Veers towards rum territory at points, very Spanish at heart, yeasty and all, with just a touch of old Highland Park heathery smoke hiding way in the back. Lovely weird dram, this. 😙
