What is Cask Strength Whisky?

Regular whisky usually has an alcohol content of 43% ABV, while the legal minimum standard in most countries is 40% ABV. Freshly distilled spirit generally exceeds 55% ABV. Most aged whisky is diluted with water before bottling. Whisky bottled directly without dilution is defined as cask strength.

Cask strength whisky boasts high alcohol volume. It undergoes no chill-filtering or water dilution, often reaching over 50% or even 60% ABV. More flavor compounds are preserved, retaining the original authentic taste of whisky.

1. Springbank 12 Year Old Cask Strength

Launched in 2010 with around 55% ABV. Blended with sherry casks and bourbon casks. The 19th batch released in 2019 contains 35% sherry cask spirit and 65% bourbon cask spirit.

It carries classic Springbank notes. Aroma features malt and coastal spicy hints, paired with peat smoke and salty sea breeze flavor.

2. Laphroaig 10 Year Old Cask Strength Batch #012

Alcohol: 60.1% ABV

It presents medicinal peat and plant ash scent. The oily palate mixes spices, dried fruits, iodine and salty seaweed with subtle mineral tones, ending with mild bitterness. Water brings smoother texture, releasing fruit and dark chocolate flavors while retaining medicinal notes.

This whisky has polarizing tastes, loved or disliked by drinkers.

3. Bruichladdich Port Charlotte MRC:01

Alcohol: 60.1% ABV

Medicinal peat and ash dominate the nose. Rich oily mouthfeel combines spices, dried fruits, iodine and briny seaweed, finishing slightly bitter. Dilution softens the body and brings out fruity and dark chocolate undertones.

4. Glenfarclas 105

Dating back to 1968, it is one of the earliest released cask strength single malts.

Named after British proof scale 105, equivalent to 60% ABV. No age statement on the bottle. Dry, mellow and spice-forward, it is widely recognized as great value-for-money whisky.
